Mom vs Dad

Unfortunately, kids do not come with perfect instructions on how to take care, raise, or even teach them. However with lots of love and support, parenting roles vary from household to household. Being a mom or dad is a non stop job that has no vacation days and very little to no break time.

If you take a second and think of your parents, what are some differences that their parenting style has taught you? I can think of a few…

Mothers tend to find themselves in a more nurturing role. When it comes to crying, accidentally hurting themselves, and feeling upset mothers tend to have a more emotional connection with their children. This also has to do with being more verbal than a father. It is known the women speak on average 20,000 words a day while men speak 7,000 words. Therefor when it comes to discipline, a mother may talk it out and express her expectations clearly with words of affirmation.

Fathers typically are more focused on high expectations for their children. This leads them to focus less on making their child feel good or feel too secure because they want to challenge and prepare them for the real world. Of Course there will be days when they will express how proud they are, however it would not be as expressive as a mother. Whenever a child is getting disciplined, the father would want to address the situation immediately vs holding it off later on.

Even though the roles could absolutely be reversed, typically mothers have an emotional connection with their child while fathers want to challenge their kids for what is to come in the future. Whats most important is finding a balance between both parenting styles. A few tips to help succeed in this area is to negotiate, support each other in parenting, get together on key values, and get help if its not working. There will be differences in the decisions you make. However talking it out and having an understanding of the situation is crucial to maintain a healthy relationship for the child.

Not only do you want to come together in a decision but to also support the decision that was discussed. Every family has different values therefore finding the right solution for your family will develop an understanding for the child growing up. With patience and love you can get through any decision!
